PSC still undecided about minimum GPA for non-gazetted officers' exams

KATHMANDU, Jan 19: The Public Service Commission (PSC) is calling application to recruit non-gazetted officers after a month but the commission is still undecided on what should be the qualifying GPA for class ten graduates to participate in the civil service exams.

The PSC is still in under discussion with the Ministry of Education (MoE) on the provision that will allow the graduates to participate in non-gazetted officers' examination. The eight amendment of the Education Act 1972 had provisioned for conducting SLC exams at grade 12 instead of grade 10 under the existing system.

As per the annual schedule of PSC, it will start the process to recruit non-gazetted officers after mid-February.

“We have just a month left to finalize the criteria for the examination,” Umesh Prasad Mainali, chairperson of the PSC, told Republica on Wednesday. “We are discussing with the education ministry to set criteria for the exams.”

The government had set 1.6 GPA in grade 10 as the minimum requirement for students to be eligible for enrolling in grade 11.

However, Mainali assured that they will finalize the GPA score required for the process of recruiting non-gazetted officers.

Shanta Bahadur Shrestha, secretary at the MoE, said that they have advised the commission to set the minimum score of at least 1.6 GPA for the civil service exams as well.

“We can only advise the commission but the decision should be taken by the commission itself,” said Shrestha. “Minimum 1.6 GPA will be the best idea for the exams. But this is only our initial suggestion to the PSC.”

However, the PSC has been asking the MoE to suggest the minimum GPA in formal way so that it can make efforts to take a final decision regarding the minimum score. “We will make the final announcement as soon as possible,” said PSC chairman Mainali.
